ATC's own Erin Moraites and William Haas are Vulcan Sposored Athletes and train only with Vulcan Competition Kettlebells. Her results in 2015 National Championships were achieved using 24 kg Vulcan Absolute kettlebells with 35 mm handle. Her results in her weight class with official regulation size and handle kettlebell have yet to be bested in national level competition. Check out the cool video above and the description of these great kettlebells below.

The patented design of the Vulcan® Absolute™ (US D 728,040 S) Competition Kettlebells represents the experience that comes from years of coaching, training, and competing in the sport of Kettlebell Lifting. The patented design of the Vulcan Absolute Kettlebell is unique in many ways and ergonomically designed to increase performance as well as lower the incidence of injury to the wrists and forearms that is common with other Competition Kettlebell designs.

Performance and Safety: The design of the Vulcan Absolute Kettlebell allows the handle of the kettlebell to sit further down on the lifters forearm, bringing the majority of the weight proximal to the lifters body . All other designs of competition kettlebell handles fit higher up on the lifters wrist displacing the majority of the weight to a more distal position away from the lifters body. To explain this in mechanical terms: The kettlebell is the load and the elbow of the lifter is the fulcrum point. The further the load is situated from the fulcrum point, the more increased effort is required to move the load, or in the case of the rack position; more work is required to stabilize the load. All of other designs of kettlebells place the load of the kettlebell on the weakest part of the forearm bones structure which is more susceptible to injury. The Vulcan Absolute Kettlebell not only places the load of the kettlebell further down the forearm at a stronger point but distributes more of the weight onto the body of the lifter for increased comfort, control, and safety.

Since 2006, I have been a proud participant of Disney’s Goofy Race and a Half Challenge. It’s the crazy event where you run a half marathon on Saturday and a full marathon the following day. I commend the people who log in lots of running miles to prepare for this. This event is just a “fun’ event for me, where I am not trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon or set any records. It’s all been about finishing the event and celebrating the achievement.

2012 marked the seventh year of running Goofy. I went in with the same attitude of having fun and enjoying the spirit of the spectators, runners and characters along the route. I try to run conservatively in the half marathon to save my legs for the next day. I calculated that I had to run a minute slower per mile than I ran the Kiawah Island Half marathon in December (1:42). I was tickled to finish the Goofy Half at 1:55:11 (8:48 pace) despite being stuck in Corral C and having to work my way through the pack of runners from Corral B and A during the run.

After seeing Runners Relations on Saturday, I was able to place a spot into Corral A for the marathon. On Sunday morning, I noticed that my legs were not tired, but they definitely did not feel fresh! My plan was to start at a 9:00 minute pace and see what I could do after the halfway point. I was surprised to maintain an average pace of 8:45 throughout the marathon where I finished at 3:49:17. My legs did not feel DEAD tired until the last mile, and by that time, I was ready for the event to be over!

I maintain a running log and noticed that I averaged about 22 miles per week in November and December last year. Everyone will have their formula of what will work for them for a running event. In previous years, I've logged 35 to 40 miles a week the two weeks before running a marathon and have been sure to run one in November or December in order to feel I could finish the Goofy event without too much trauma :). My husband and I couldn't find a marathon that struck our fancy in the fall, so I ran a half marathon in November and December and had a long run of 20 miles in November (day after Thanksgiving) and December (two days after Christmas).

I give tons of credit to Coach Cyrus Peterson at Advanced Training Concepts and his Kettlebell Lifting program I have been participating in since August 2010. The time and commitment has paid off, and it was reflected in having my best Goofy Challenge time ever! The irony behind this was that my only goal for this marathon was to finish. Cyrus tried to explain to me that Kettlebell Lifting builds muscular and cardiovascular endurance in addition to strength and power. Kettlebell Lifting for timed sets involves both aerobic and anaerobic functions leading to an increase in blood plasma volume as well as V02 Max. I was able to run more comfortably due to the increased pain tolerance and lactic acid threshold. All of these benefits acquired from Kettlebell Lifting helped me run like the wind and also attain a Boston Marathon qualifying time for my age division!

Today, someone asked about the kb swing that is demonstrated on this site by Master of Sports and WKC Coach Jessica DiBiase.

They told me that the swing that is depicted here (the way we swing) was not what is depicted in a lot of the youtube "expert" kettlebell videos. Rather than write a blog about the differences, I thought it best to just use some information already written on the subject by Steve Cotter, International Kettlebell and Fitness Federation. This was written in 2007 but it is still relevant to this day. Give it a read as I'm sure you will see more people doing this type of kettlebell lifting than what we do, even though we are now in 2011! In all honesty, this is where I started when I first gained knowledge of kettlebell lifting, as in the beginning this was all we knew, but now I view it as poor technique and know for a fact that it is very inefficient and can lead to injury. You can download the PDF Here

Last night during team training some of the team members remarked that some of the newer people seem to be picking up the lifts much quicker than they did. In all honesty, that is my doing as well as yours. As I have now been instructing fitness and weightlifting in general for 13 years, lifting kettlebells myself for 4 years, and specifically instructing kettlebell lifting for 3 years, I have learned more efficient ways to instruct people. I have learned from teaching you, through professional certifications I have gained over the years, and also through my own study and analysis of kettlebell methodology. So for all the people who started with me in 2009 you can thank yourselves for the progress that ATC has made as a group in such a short time!
There are no limits in staying in shape!tag:kettlehellbootkamp.ning.com,2011-02-03:3124245:BlogPost:27732011-02-03T03:30:00.000ZLana Torkildsenhttp://kettlehellbootkamp.ning.com/profile/LanaTorkildsen

I am in my fifth month of kettlebell lifting and still enjoying it! I will never forget what a friend told me when I mentioned to her awhile ago that I would get sore from some of the kettlebell sessions. Her assumption was that because I cross trained with running, cycling, yoga and swimming, I should be in good shape and should not experience any soreness. I can tell you first hand that the sport of kettlebell lifting will humble you as soon as you lift a bell for the first time. Cyrus does a great job in keeping the workouts fresh and challenging! This has encouraged me to continue the program after my initial three months of "I will try this and see how I like it" attitude.

It has been so inspiring to see the other ATC members working out hard with focus and determination. Most people go to the gym for various reasons whether it is weight loss, socializing or maintaining an exercise program. What has been refreshing at ATC, a private advanced training facility, is that the owner and coach, Cyrus, knows everyone by name which provides a personal feel to the facility. The members are very down to earth, friendly people. Most of the members are more advanced in kettlebell lifting than I am which can be intimidating. I see it as a challenge to go out of my comfort level and see what I can do with a bell as big as I am. I am not sure the maximum of kilograms I can handle as I progress but time and effort will tell!

Now why would a triathlete/ marathoner consider kettlebell lifting and able to juggle it all? The key ingredient in this deciding factor is to do the research on the sport of kettlebell and its benefits. This is not your ordinary "dust collector" that you see advertised on QVC. There seems to be no limit on the shape you can be in with this sport. It's also a matter of priorities on what is important to the individual who wants to be and stay in shape. The subtle changes and improvements I've noticed in running, cycling, and swimming speaks for itself! I say subtle now since I am in the early stages of training for triathlon season again. I have run in two marathons since I joined ATC and have plans to do two more by late April. I have slacked off on speed work last year due to the hiatus on racing but have slowly reminded myself what "death" feels like the last couple of weeks :). I started the masters swim class at the Y this year where we meet two times a week. I have noticed that it is not as hard for me to push the water back like in the past. I am still working on improving my stroke technique which is the key to swim efficiently. Cycling in a higher gear is not as hard now as in the past. I hope to see the final results when the time trials start later this spring.
Friends and Co-workers Offertag:kettlehellbootkamp.ning.com,2011-01-24:3124245:BlogPost:27622011-01-24T03:00:00.000ZCyrus Petersonhttp://kettlehellbootkamp.ning.com/profile/CyrusPeterson

He wrote a very appealing message about the sport of kettlebell lifting and its benefits for endurance athletes. I'm usually receptive to trying new things so we corresponded for awhile and set up a Kettlebell Introduction Seminar for the Charlotte Track and Triathlon Club (CTTC) where I am a board member.

Since I have never seen anyone use kettlebells except the miniature "toy bells" at the Y, I wasn't sure what this lifting concept would entail. I was enthralled during the seminar where three members of ATC were lifting the competition size kettlebells effortlessly while Coach Cyrus gave a detailed explanation of the movements and the body mechanics involved . It made me tired just watching them! During the hands on session for the CTTC members, I was astonished at the liter of sweat that poured from my body after only two to three minutes of kettlebell lifting! After Coach Cyrus provided more details about the history of kettlebell lifting and the benefits for runners and triathletes, I was intrigued to try it out and go into the EFP program. I could tell from Cyrus' presentation and physique that he had a great deal of training experience and education and I respected that.

After the seminar I joined ATC and commenced my training in the Kettlebell Elite Fitness Protocol (EFP). The timing of signing up for the EFP came in perfectly. 2010 is the year where I wanted to take a break from the monotony of running and triathlons. One experience's different terrains and towns during endurance events but there comes a point where it becomes just plain old running, cycling and swimming over again. I have been running seriously (marathons, half-marathons, and various smaller distances) since 1999 and participating in triathlons since 2006. The body and mind sometimes need a break from the repetition of speed work, hill work, cycling speed intervals and just trying to stay afloat in swimming.

I have 39 marathons, 30 half marathons, over 150 5K races, 20 sprint, and 6 Olympic distance triathlons under my belt. The common misconception I hear from runners and triathletes is that they are in good shape and can eat whatever they want. This is true to a point but we are only using a portion of our muscles and under-utilizing the rest, i.e., upper body, core area, hips and hamstrings. Most of us are guilty of not performing weight bearing exercises during marathon or triathlon training and as a result we lack the resiliency to injury that a solid strength and conditioning program can deliver to us. I thought I was in good shape until I started the EFP program!

Once I finished my last triathlon for the season and finished the Assessment and Orientation Program, I started EFP the second week of August. This new type of soreness I felt from training with kettlebells let me know where my weaknesses were and motivated me to become stronger in those areas . I was ready to take on a new challenge!

Week 1: A real eye opener. I realized quickly that I needed to consume a few more calories before going into an EFP session. I barely made it through two timed sets (we work for time not for repetitions) and was very fatigued at the end. Fortunately, Coach Cyrus was easy on me and very patient. I can be slow to learn new things but he was very attentive to make sure that my technique and form were correct. Patience and attention to detail...two must have qualities in a Coach.

Week 2: After consuming a high carbohydrate meal an hour before the session, I finished the three timed sets in style! I was very surprised of how fun the EFP sessions can be. Cyrus had a different routine every time which is so refreshing! I am still running on other days preparing for the Blue Ridge Relay where I am part of a 12 member team. The relay covers about 206 miles and is very hilly. The Wednesday morning run route entails some hill work where my girlfriends and I try to charge them. I noticed after my second week of EFP that taking hills seemed much less difficult. These hills were starting to feel like a piece of cake!

Week 3: It's dawning on me that Coach instills a lot of confidence in his students. I never thought I could do swings with almost half of my bodyweight, or graduate to the pinky competition size kettlebell (8 kilograms). This is what Cyrus has been referring to as the progression in this program.

I have not cycled or swam since the first weekend of August but I am curious to see the results once I get my mojo back on these and will blog about it. This is the week where I am scheduled to run the half-marathon in Disneyland. I have been a slacker on speed work so my goal for this event was to run it under 2 hours while giving the "high five" to all the Disney characters along the route. The route is relatively flat with a couple of bumps and I was not in any mood to push myself either. I was very pleased and surprised with my time and the way my legs felt strong during the race. Running felt effortless the whole time that I really enjoyed the sport! My legs usually feel fatigued around mile 10 but my legs had a lot of power left to keep on trucking for the last 3.1! I was also in my second week of running in orthotics so that was another variable to add to the mix.

Week 4: time for measurements and body composition again! I was tickled with the results from the body composition: lower body fat and a toner physique. My friends have been teasing me about my "peanut" sized biceps. One more week of EFP before the Blue Ridge Relay. Mountain goat hill...here I come!

One of the things I'm learning about kettlebell lifting is that it involves using your whole body to perform the movements. I'm actually enjoying the "juice" (sweat) pouring out of me while going through the sessions. This is something I did not experience from working out with the nautilus machines or free weights in the commercial gyms. I never anticipated how effortless running can be. My core area and legs feel much stronger only after one month. I can't deny the fact that with age and time, you lose muscle mass more quickly. I really dread the back fat and the "salt and pepper" jiggle creeping upon me so I am tickled to see lately, the transformation in the arms, shoulders and back.

My next blog will talk about how I managed to shave off 1 minute in a 5K race without speed work in my current repertoire.

PS: To Coach Cyrus: You have humbled and improved me in my athletic endeavors! Thank you so much for the confidence you have in me and putting up with my jokes and silliness! :) You are the best and I mean it from the bottom of my heart!
Elite Fitness Protocol and Kettlebell Competition Trainingtag:kettlehellbootkamp.ning.com,2010-06-27:3124245:BlogPost:22342010-06-27T20:30:00.000ZCyrus Petersonhttp://kettlehellbootkamp.ning.com/profile/CyrusPeterson

There is a full description of the class on the website and I have also described it in several previous emails and newsletters. If you don't know what it is or understand it by now then that probably means you shouldn't participate in it.
Competition training will also be performed during the same class. I have also given a full description of what is involved in competition kettlebell lifting in previous emails, newsletters, and there is also information on this site related to Girevoy sport or competition kettlebell lifting. If the kettlebell bootcamp is too much for you, then quite naturally competition is out of your realm. You must be able to sustain a 10 minute timed set with good form according to regulation, lifts without proper form are not counted, so its more to competition than just getting the weight up any way you can.
As of right now the cost to participate in any of the additional classes is only 10$ a month for existing members. I offered this as an incentive to get people more involved and also offer more classes to accommodate everyone's schedule. Effective Jul 31 a new pricing structure will be implemented and the cost of the additional programs will increase accordingly. Your payment will not increase as long as your membership is active. If you were to quit and then later return you would come in at the new rates. If you wait until July 31st or thereafter and then finally come to the decision that you would like to add more classes the cost will be more than the little 10 bucks that is now.

One thing that you definitely need, especially if you are planning on competing - Shoes. This is why I have people to squat and deadlift barefoot. Regular tennis shoes - especially running shoes and the "shox " type shoes are the absolute worst for lifting (they're really not good for running either truth be told). They offer no lateral stability and they're just too "squishy" for any type of ballistic lifting. Check out the video below, its from VS Athletics a maker of high quality lifting shoes. I also found a video of a guy squatting in some type of "shox" shoe. Most people don't realize how these things look since they really can't see their feet while they squat. Lifting shoes range from around 60$ to almost $200 for the top of the line Addidas shoes worn by Olympic athletes. It's not a lot of money compared to the cost of MRI's, surgery, rehab, and doctors visits from blowing a knee out. The $60 to $70 range shoes should be enough at this level. Check out the videos below. I've also included some links to some other manufacturers that offer good shoes at a low price. Now, this is completely your choice - when I lift, I wear lifting shoes- I like my knees. As far as competition is concerned - you have to want to do it on your own. You have to have a competitive desire and you have to be mentally tough. I cant give you that you'll have to find that for yourself.

Cleanse Nutritional Program. These plans are designed by registered dietitians and are clinically proven. I will also be starting one myself. All plans will include the following: Nutritional Assessment, nine one-on-one personal training sessions, weekly body fat evaluation, weigh in, and body circumference measurement, and multi-vitamins (CLA, Probiotic or Thermogenic supplement). All program participants will take before and after pictures. There will also be a contest for anyone who would like to challenge themselves in this way. The person who loses the most body fat (not weight) will receive a one month free membership to either the KettleHell BootKamp or the upcoming HotBody BootKamp. The 21 Day Jump Start is available to anyone who is interested in looking and feeling great. Please pass this information along to all your friends, family, and co-workers. Below is a more in depth description of the different Detox/Cleanse Programs. If you are interested in participating in one of these programs please contact me. I will only accept those who I feel are committed and I will accept a limited number of participants.

About Detox and Cleanse Nutrition Plans:
Lifestyle and emotional toxins build up over many years. The
liver is the first organ that filters toxins from our GI tract.
Many digestive problems such as constipation, diarrhea, food allergies,
diverticulitis, Celiac disease (malabsorption disease), colitis, IBS and
Crohn’s disease are related to toxicity deposits in the liver and colon.

Fruit Detox & Low Glycemic Plan
This 21 Day Jump Start program begins with a fruit detox and cleanse phase
for the first 14 days followed by 7 day low glycemic phase eating plan. The
fruit detoxification and cleanse phase uses primarily low glycemic fruits and
juices to help the body eliminate bad bacteria while giving the body more
energy to devote to cleansing and healing. The primary protein source is
derived from eggs. The final 7 days of the 21 day plan moves away from the
detox phase and follows a strict low glycemic plan where the glycemic index
rating of all carbohydrates is rated no higher than 55. This means higher
sustained energy levels and better metabolic management for weight control.

Veggie Detox & Low Glycemic Plan
This program begins with a veggie detox and cleanse
phase for the first 14 days followed by 7 day low glycemic phase eating
plan. The vegetarian detoxification template is loaded with green vegetables,
nuts, fruits, lentils and gluten free carbohydrates to help the body eliminate
built up toxins in the liver. The primary protein sources are derived from
eggs, fish and some tofu. The final 7 days of the 21 day plan moves away
from the detox phase and follows a strict low glycemic plan where the
glycemic index rating of all carbohydrates is rated no higher than 55. This
means higher sustained energy levels and better metabolic management for
weight control.

Meat Detox & Low Glycemic Plan
This program begins with a detox and cleanse phase
which include lean meats for the first 14 days followed by 7 day low
glycemic phase eating plan. The animal protein detoxification template is
full of organic chicken and beef sources of protein along with lentils and
black beans for cleansing. Our elimination process begins by avoiding all
dairy, gluten/wheat grains, caffeine, fish, shellfish and corn products. It is
loaded with high fiber fruits and vegetables along with providing you with
low glycemic, high nutrient based carbohydrates such as brown rice,
broccoli, and asparagus. The final 7 days of the 21 day plan moves
away from the detox phase and follows a strict low glycemic plan.

Yeah, yeah. I know. How much?
I thought about this a lot and I wanted to give a price that enabled me to give my best effort without being so much that it would deter someone who really wanted to do it, and is capable of doing it.
Ok, HOW MUCH?!.
Chill out!, Ok, its $349. The program is AS IS. No Modifications.
Why?!
Because I said so, That's why! Just kidding. Because it HAS to work. If you're not satisfied with your results I will give you your money back.
Are you freakin' crazy?!
No, I'm just really good at what I do and committed to helping
people change their lives through fitness, healthy, lifestyle and nutrition.

Think about it like this: Nine personal training sessions from the average personal trainer at a commercial gym will cost you no less than $40 an hour, then add the
cost of the supplements to that at GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, or even
Walmart prices. Get your calculator out. Its a lot more than $349 and we
haven't even talked about all the other extras (read the first paragraph
again). The 21 Day Jump Start will start in the first week of January. This is first come - first serve, and only one time per person. I will never do this again and deadline for entrance is the 31st of January. The day after my 39th Birthday. I'm getting too old for this! :-)
AFTER

Here is Kristine last week before she competed in a swimsuit competition in Greensboro this past weekend. I think she's about 115 lbs or so at 5' 2". Below is her BEFORE Picture at around 148. Kristine and I had a lot of obstacles to overcome in order to get her to this condition. She dislocated her shoulder this Summer and was unable to exercise her upper body for about 12 weeks. Once we were able to train, it was very slow and careful so as not to re-injure her. She also has a fairly busy schedule which only allowed me to train her twice per week for 30 minutes each session. Kristine followed a meal plan that I created for her and performed cardio and calisthenic workouts at home that I designed for her. Just another example of hard work and discipline paying off, not to mention excellent instruction given by yours truly. ;-)
Cyrus’s KettleHell BootKamp is the best workout I’ve had since I was a collegiate athlete – nothing remotely compares! I am 32 years old and ran track in college. I thought I could never get back into the shape I was in when I was running at ASU. Well, I was wrong and with the help of Cyrus I am almost there. I decided to get serious about getting back into shape when I received a poor report card from my primary care physician last year. After only three months of training these are my before and after stats:
AFTER

I am ecstatic with my physical results – losing weight and body fat. I am most happy with the impact the training has had on my cholesterol levels. Heart disease, high cholesterol and high blood pressure do not run in my family and I was shocked when I got my results back in July 2008 that showed my cholesterol was approaching 300. That was extremely scary, but it still took a little while for to really buckle down and start the process. It was not until I found a class that was similar to the training I did when I was in college that I really decided to put forth a huge effort to lose weight and get healthy. Since I started in April, I try to attend at least 3 BootKamp sessions per week. My physician was amazed at my progress and even wrote “Wow!” beside my cholesterol results. I cannot thank Cyrus enough for his help. I have received tons of compliments on my transformation, Thanks Cyrus!
Yesterday, I was having a discussion with a young lady from Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation. We spoke about the value of certification, education and experience as it relates to fitness instruction. We were discussing this topic because starting Wednesday June 19, 2009 I will be conducting a kettlebell Introduction seminar and boot camp at Park Rd Park in South Charlotte.

When I was younger I used to work on cars, mostly street racing cars. I've done it all from Installing transmissions, starters, heads, cams, water pumps, electronic ignitions, nitrous kits, carburetors, you name it. The majority of the things I learned were through experience, basically trial and error. I did actually buy some books that were very helpful as well as watching some television shows on hot rod building. I feel that I'm fairly knowledgeable on cars and basic auto mechanics. But the truth of this story is that I AM NOT a mechanic, I'm not certified by anyone to work on any type of car. The BIG difference between myself and the typical street performance mechanic is: Not only does the mechanic have more actual experience and practical knowledge of auto mechanics, he also has the education and certifications that give him knowledge far beyond what I have. I could possibly hire myself out as a "Shady Tree Mechanic" the guy in the neighborhood that performs minor auto repairs for cash, but that's about it. I doubt very seriously that anyone in their right mind would let me work on their Mercedes, BMW, or Lexus, at least I hope not! Would you? That's a no brainer.

All that being said, why would you let someone who is not certified work on two of your most valuable possessions, your health and body? Does that make sense?

There is great value in proper certification. As a fitness professional, not only do I have the experience of being involved in sports and fitness for over 20 years, but I have the certifications and the knowledge that goes with it. Its very irresponsible for an individual to offer training without proper certification. If you are in search of certified Kettlebell Instructors I would suggest that you check with KBC, RKC, IKFF, AOS, these are the major certifying organizations as related to kettlebell instruction.
It would seem that a kettlebell boot camp may have a place in Charlotte. Within 3 weeks of the start date 35 people have expressed interest in at least trying the boot camp for two weeks free. It would seem that a kettlebell boot camp may have a place in Charlotte. Within 3 weeks of the start date 35 people have expressed interest in at least trying the boot camp for two weeks free. I have always felt that Charlotte was somewhat lacking in alternative fitness modalities. The YMCA and Peak Fitness as well as other commercial gyms have become the model for fitness in Charlotte. I think this is unfortunate and residents of Charlotte suffer for it.Personal training in Charlotte is fairly lame and predictable with very few trainers actually getting results from their clients and very few clients actually wanting to put in the hard work necessary to achieve the results they are promised. They enthusiastically sign up for the "cookie cutter" style of training that most personal training studios and commercial gyms dole out. A 26 year old women who I recently started training said that she "felt Like a fool" for paying $360 per month for personal training when she hadn't lost 1 pound in 6 months. She would tell her friends that she was working with a trainer and they would just give her a blank stare. The first time I trained her she vomited within 10 minutes. Not that I was pushing her in an unreasonable manner. She told me she had been working with a "trainer" for 6 months so I prescribed an exercise routine based on that information. Unfortunately her so called "trainer" had her doing endless repetitions with light weights and mostly "isolation exercises". She had trained for 6 months and didn't have an iota of knowledge concerning nutrition, or strength training. What was she paying for?

When I told a a few people I was starting a kettlebell boot camp their first response was: Whats a kettlebell? or as one guy said "cattleballs"? I wanted to break out of the mold of conventional training and give people what most training programs lack: Intensity, Proper Nutritional Guidance, Accountability, and a program that would encompass all aspects of physical fitness. I chose the kettlebell as one of my tools due to its ability to holistically train the human body. Its virtually a portable hand-held gym. Someone asked me if a bow-flex was a good piece of equipment...I gave them a kettlebell and told 'em to swing it.....save your money.
